Christian Practices

Jesus taught that Christian practices should be consistent with the inward condition of the heart. Holding to external practices which no longer correlate with the heart is repugnant to God. Jesus railed against praying in vain repetitions and putting on a gloomy face while fasting.

The Sacraments

  • Baptism, when a Christian joins the church

  • Confirmation, when a Christian confirms his or her faith

  • Matrimony

  • The Eucharist is the holist of Christian sacraments in many Christian faiths. During the service, members of a church will eat a small wafer of bread. Christian tradition states that at the Last Supper before his execution, Jesus asked his followers to think of the meal as the body and blood he would soon sacrifice.

Prayer - Prayer is when Christians talk to God, and listen to what He has to say. In prayer they give thanks to God for what He has done, and ask him to help others and themselves.

Worship is a way of saying thank you to God. Worship could be a prayer, or singing songs, which are often called hymns in a church. Sunday is the main day set aside for worship and the gathering together of those in the Christian community and various sects.

Holy Days - These days are variously called church calendar, ecclesiastical dates, fasting days, festivals, holy days, sabbats, days of observance and seasonal days of celebration, etc.

Fasting - A tool recommended by Jesus to his disciples. In scripture, fasting has to do in various ways with self-denial and self-discipline. Sometimes fasting was an expression of penitence for past sin.

Meditation - Christians vary on their idea of meditation. Some Christian meditation is contemplation about God, requesting answers from God and listening. Other Christians believe it is stilling the mind and emptying of self of all that is not God, including our thoughts. However one does meditation, the practice is meant for opening yourself for God to talk to you and you to listen.
